RULES: WE MUST HAVE THEM, BUT…

They can be OUR rules, lest we forget. Let’s not forget —

Soon, I will be publishing submissions I have received from a number of people active in the DOTxXx TLD Discussion.

Because FAIRNESS is so important to what the site is about, I’ve been struggling all day with the questions:

Who speaks for the Adult Industry?
Is the current “speaker” appropriate in an “official” capacity?
How should our representation be selected?
What shall be their powers?
To whom shall our representative(s) be accountable?
What should be the objectives of our Official Body?

And then, more intimately…

How can I make prospective participants to this “discussion” feel safe?
What standards or ideals (beyond the obvious ethics and honesty) should be represented here?
How do I mitigate the advantages of submitting last?
How do I answer the question: “Jack, why should I do this?”

For many of the questions in the second group, I was able to reassure myself and find the Ethical Solidity I was looking for by thinking of myself as a “publisher/editor/writer/netizen”. That may sound complicated, but it made things very clear for me. I am those 4 nouns at all times, except at other times, when I become more 1 than any of the other 3. The publisher is concerned with the “enterprise” of the site. It is the job of the publisher to manage resources against ambitions and deliver a result. The editor has responsibility for the Voice, for all that is said and for all that could result from what is said. The editor has duties both to the people that will read what is written here with any expectations, and also to those people who will consider whether this “vehicle” can do service to their messages. The writer is the Zealot/Dreamer — lol — he’s the one you should worry about. His own ideas can get in the way, overpower the ideas of others. He works closely with the editor, but it is a tense relationship, marked by long periods of silence. The netizen is essentialy an electronic ecologist.

Well, I managed to get these 4 guys in a room together for a while today, and this is what they came up with:

The biggest problem, as I see it, is trust – people just don’t know what may happen to their words once they leave them somewhere. And we are right to be leery — not so much for issues of scruples (though there are issues of scruples to worry about), but more so because there are no universal standards of conduct in connection with the various types of Web site where users can leave their words. With forums, we observe that problematic posts are altered or deleted swiftly when the irritated parties occupy a certain precinct, but other posts are never put out of their misery that should be. CMs, like Mambo have too much “black-box” — it’s kinda write it and forget it. Simple sites or free standing pages are too wispy. One good puff from a stout wind…

Blogs, on the other hand, are different from all the above in ways that make the blog a wonderful, wonderful receptacle for text. The elegant blog design elevates even the humblest of text, the structure of the blog provides excellent navigational access and all blogs have a basic structural likeness in common. The way that blogs connect to each other, and to a number of centralized resources, reflects a community. The vigilance (if there need be any) is shifted to the peer. Unlike forums, the blog is intended for properly edited and spellchecked submissions, which one (as writer/editor…) is expected to have “prepared” for publication. This is appropriate when you are “cherishing” the documents in their own little shrine.

Okay, so… when all was said and done, the key issue boiled down to trust that documents — once published as agreed — would not be altered later. Once that was covered, it became easy to relax in other areas of potential concern. It’ll work like this:

1. You must be invited to post, but I will not turn away anyone who comes with passion and intelligence.

2. We (you and I) will collaborate on your piece — meaning only that I will read i before publishing, and may make some suggestions which you would be under no obligation to accept. Once published, the world will know it was acceptable as presented to both its author and the Editor.

3. To ensure document validity, the author will provide a small, unique image with a unique URL that will be recorded by 3rd parties. The image will be placed in the published document via hotlink. The author may delete or withdraw the image if at any moment the document appears modified.

4. There is no limit on the number of documents an author may submit for publication. But neither is there any requirement that submissions be accepted — except as described in #5.

5. An author, once invited or accepted, gets the right to publish 2 pieces. If there is any disagreement between the author and the Editor, the Editor promises to persist in a Best Efforts scenario, until a mutually acceptable second piece is produced for publication.

And that’s pretty much it —

I’m going to be posting some Guidelines and Requirements shortly to ensure that submissions answer new questions or answer old questions in new ways.
